Last August, my friend Marcus Lattimore was the keynote speaker at my foundation’s Student Athlete Summit. During the Q&A session after his speech, a young boy asked, “Marcus, when times get hard, why don’t you give up?” Without missing a beat, Marcus replied, “I don’t give up, because I know someone’s watching me.”
The whole audience was quiet. Marcus spoke words that were simple, yet profoundly true. Whether you realize it or not, there is always someone watching you. In fact, that very notion is one of the main sources of my own motivation. I work hard, not only to achieve the goals I have set for myself, but to inspire other people out there to believe they can also do the things they set their mind to.
Don’t live your life with the belief you live in a vacuum. Whether it’s a younger sibling, daughter, son, parent, coach, employer, or stranger, there is always someone watching what you do. Are you going to be an inspiration or a disappointment? Are you going to motivate others to become the best they can be, or are you going to be an example of someone who never follows through? The choice is yours, but never forget that there is someone watching you.
“Don’t worry that children never listen to you. Worry that they are always watching you.” –Robert Fulghum
